Landing on the moon was a huge event for  America. Both Russia and the United States had a goal to put  a man on the moon, so it began to be a race to see who could put the first man  on the moon.
There were three men chosen to fly n the Apollo Project that NASA had set up. The three men were Neil Armstrong (commander), Michael Collins (command module pilot), and Edwin E. Aldrin Jr., nicked named the "Buzz" (lunar module pilot). The Apollo 11 mission was to land on the moon and return safely.
The Apollo11 was set to be launched on July 16th. it launched at 9:32 A.M. on launch complex  39a and 39b from the Kennedy Space Center, Cape Kennedy. The launch complex was built for the Apollo program, but was later adjusted to  support space shuttle missions.

While they were orbiting they took pictures to help them get a better landing views. They found that the best place for them to land the shuttle on the moon was the Sea of Tranquility.
On July 20, 1969 Neil Armstrong was the first person to set foot on the moon. Next in line was Edwin E. Aldrin. They stayed on the moon for 21.6 hours collecting sample and
performing  experiments. While they were on the moon Michael stayed in Lunar orbit and took care of the shuttle.
On the moon they put a American flag, a plaque and Neil Armstrong said his most famous words: "that's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." On the  plaque was inscribed: " Here Men From Earth First Set Foot Upon The Moon July 1969 A.D. We Came In Peace For All Mankind."
On July 24 the three men landed down in the Atlantic ocean. The were picked up by the U.S.S. Hornet. They were honored with a ticker tape parade in New York City soon after they arrived back on Earth
In the future  NASA  intends to go back to the Moon and also conduct a mission to Mars.
