Neil Armstrong  was born on August 5, 1930 close to Wapakoneta, Ohio. Early in his life he became very interested in flying. At age 16 he got his student pilot license. He got it be for he could even drive. He graduated from Blume High School in 1947. Then he went to to study Aeronautical Engineering at Purdue University.
     In 1949 he was called to active duty by the U.S. Navy. He became an Advisor and in 1950 was sent to Korea. Neil flew 78 Missions. He left the Army in 1952, and joined NASA. For 17 more years  he was an engineer, test pilot, administrator, and a astronaut.  In the 50's he transferred to NASA and became a research pilot at NASA High Flight Station. He flew over 200 different model aircrafts.  
     In 1962 he changed  to the astronaut status. he was chosen to be among the crew on the Apollo 11. So he move to Texas for 4 years and trained. In March 1966 he took his first space mission on the Gemini VIII. On July 20 1969 he was the first man to set foot on the moon. He was given many awards and received many metals. In 1971 he retired from NASA and went on and did many other things with his life. He is currently living on his farm in Lebanon, Ohio.
