Nat Turners Rebellion |
Nat Turner was born on October 2. 1800 in Southampton, Virginia. As a child he was thought to be very intelligent also" intended for great purpose" Nat grew up to be a very religious slave preacher .When he was twenty-one years of age Nat Turner ran away from his owner Samuel Turner . But not long after Nat left he had a vision from a spirit telling him "return to the service of my earthly father" Nat then returned to his life as a slave. A year later Samuel died. Samuels wife Putnam Moore soon married a man named Travis Moore . Travis Moore was soon Nat Turners new owner which Nat seemed to like fairly well. About three years later Nat had a second vision. He had saw lights in the sky and prayed to find out what they had meant" Then while laboring in the fields, I discovered drops of blood in the corn, as though it were dew drops from heaven and I communicated it to many, both white and black, in the nationhood; And then I found on the leaves in the woods hieroglyphic character and numbers, with the forms of men in different attitudes, portrayed in blood, and representing the figures I had seen in the heavens." After this vision had occurred he knew God had chosen him to lead the African Americans to freedom. May 12,1828 Turner had a third vision " I heard a loud noise in the heavens, and the spirit instantly appeared to me and said the serpent was loosened and Christ laid down the he had borne for the sins of men, and that I should take it on and fight against the serpent for the time was approaching fast, when the fist shall be last and the last be first... and the signs in heaven that it would be known by me When I should commence the great work, and until the first sigh appeared, I should conceal it from the knowledge at me and or the appearance of the sigh...Should arise and prepare myself and slat the enemies with there own weapons." Not long after this vision on August 18 an apocalypse accrued and Turner had took this as the sign he had been waiting for. |
