He was born in Illinois and later grew up to attend West Point. He was an officer during the Civil War. In 1871 he became a Major in the 7^th Calvary and went with Custer into the Black Hills. During the Battle of Little Bighorn, he attacked under the orders of General Custer and was the only unit to survive. He is very much blamed for Custer’s death.
