He was born near Moreau River, South Dakota. He received his name as a famished orphan. He ate the gall of an animal that his neighbor had killed. He became a War Chief of the Hunkpapa band of the Teton Sioux. He led the attack against Reno and his men at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. He fled to Canada after that and came back in the early year of 1881. When he surrendered he was imprisoned for several months, then was taken to Standing Rock agency in North Dakota. He died in his home in Oak Creek, South Dakota.
