The Warsaw Ghetto was built in 1940 could hold 480,000 people. Warsaw was
liquidated in 1943.
Prior to the building of the Warsaw Ghetto on September 16, the eve of Rosh Hoshnna the Jewish New Year, German planes bombed Jewish quarters, flying so low there could be no mistaking the deliberate intent. Warsaw came under siege. The Germans exploded ten to thirty thousand shells a day on the city. twenty-thousand Jews died. Houses, stores, buildings, workshops, and factories were destroyed. Finally Warsaw surrendered.
November 4, the Gestopo order that there be a ghetto built the Warsaw Ghetto.
On October 12, 1940, The Germans at last issued a decree ordering to establish
the Warsaw Ghetto which turned to be the largest ghetto holding up to 480,000
people at one time. The walls were ten feet high topped with barb wire.
If you tried escape it would cost you your life.

The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising started April 19, 1943. There were 60,000 inhabitants depleted because of starvation, disease, cold, and deportation. Kids would sneak out and threw sewers and under walls to go get food for prisoners. Let us put fire to the ghetto and attack with our knives is what one man said. Talking about the uprising some S.S. soilders went into the ghetto to get more Jews and were met by a volley of bombs twenty S.S. soilders were killed. |

Finally the great Warsaw ghetto's liquidation was declared on May 16, 1943 and the German forces desroyed the main synagogue. |
