Robert .E. Lee
      Robert .E. Lee’s father Harry Lee was a war hero they called him “Light Horse Harry”.  Harry Lee had married for the 2nd time to 20 year old Ann Hill Carter.
      Harry already had a son with his ex-wife.  They named him Henry Lee IV.  At the begging Harry and Ann had 3 children they named them – Charles Carter, Ann Kinloch , and  Sydney Smith.  The 4th child was born on January 19th, 1807 after the death of Ann’s father.   They named the child Robert Edward Lee he was named after Ann's 2 brothers.
     Ann's parents never did approve of Harry because of all the money problems he had.  He was ten of thousands of dollars in debt because of all the bad investments he made.  When Robert .E. Lee was two his father was arrested for not paying his debts.  It was so bad that Ann's father had rewritten his will so all of his money would go to Ann and her children.
      When Harry was released from prison in 1810, he and his family moved to Potomac River area.  Later in July 1812 they traveled to Baltimore to help a journalist friend. 
      In early 1824 when Robert .E. Lee was 17 years old he applied to the U.S. Military Academy, he had studied Latin, Greek, and Math.  He graduated 2nd in his class in 1829.  After he had graduated and came home in 1829 his mother had passed away.
      He received a commission as a 2nd lieutenant in the engineers.  Then he became the 1st lieutenant in 1836 and captain in 1838.  He became superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy.  In 1860 he was in command of the Department of Texas.
      In February 1865 he was made the commander of all the Confederate armies.  The war ended when Robert .E. Lee surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant at the Appomattox Court house.
      After all of that had happened he became president of Washington College, which is now known, as Washington and Lee University.  On October 12, 1870 he had died in the Washington and Lee University.
