segregation is the unjust separation of people based on their gender ,race, religion, or class. This website will be based on the segregation of races. segregation was at its peak of existence during the 1800's through the 1900's.segregation was everywhere possible such as in places like schools, institutions for the blind, deaf, metal institutions, cemeteries, prisons, military units, boats, trains, hotels, waiting rooms, restaurants, elevators, hospitals, public bathrooms, pools, water fountains, churches, and a lot of other places. white people thought this kind of segregation was a good thing. They liked it better by being totally excluded from the blacks. Around the year 1887 the democratic party regained power the party put an end to reconstruction. Which made matters worse for the blacks. the government had ways to keep the blacks from voting by using poll taxes and Fees that were to high and literacy tests to see if they could read. By 1883 the Supreme court stated that the congress couldn't prevent private acts of discrimination ''.Basically cases such as Plessy vs. Ferguson proved that they could stop blacks from voting and segregation could be done".segragation usually came hand in hand with violence. mostly because the police and most legal systems were in favor of segregation. Some organizations were very violent such as the Ku Klux Klan or otherwise known as the KKK.The KKK dressed in white and performed acts of terrorism. They murdered more than a thousand or more black people. They also burned them alive, shot them, and mobbed them. Black codes- for 200 years the black codes limited rights of blacks. but in "1868 they abandoned laws that discriminated against blacks". |

schools -
although laws said until 1890 black schools were supposed to have
equal access to the schools funds but yet they didn't. Black school
children were more likely to miss school than white school children. And
black school teachers got less pay than white school teachers. Water
fountains were segregated blacks had one and whites had
another.
Prostitution- black and white prostitutes had to be on opposite sides of the streets and whites couldn't be with blacks and blacks couldn't be with whites. Waiting rooms- the blacks and whites had to have separate waiting rooms for places like train stations and hospitals. restaurants- Some blacks were not let blacks into certain restaurants. The owners of the restaurants would hang up signs that said no blacks allowed or whites only. marriages- black ministers couldn't perform a marriage ceremony for a white couple or white ministers couldn't perform a marriage ceremony for a white couple.

During these times "increased migration of blacks Northward after the turn of the century and the Post World War 1 competition with immigrants and whites for jobs and housings" Soon led to the creation of large scale black urban ghettos began. They had there own schools, community institutions, and businesses. Because the whites did not want anything to do with the blacks. They didn't want to work with them or even live in the same community with them. In 1896 130,340 blacks were registered to vote. But, in the 1900s that number dropped to 5,326. |
Blacks fight against segregationblacks fight against segregation by fighting in court room, starting organizations and holding meetings. by joining together they fought against segregation on trains and many more segregated places. And they held speeches that inspired people to fight against segregation and to get more people to join these kind of organizations.

End Of SegregationBy the end of the century segregation was over thanks to the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth amendments. And finally racial discrimination is and was illegal everywhere in the United States, Blacks were equal to whites. They could go anywhere whites could like restaurants and trains and so many more places the words freed man now truly meant free. the blacks and whites now lived and worked together, equal at long last. segregation has come along way from slavery to the black codes to being able to vote. To finally being treated as equals. |
NowNow there isn't really segregation but there still is a lot of racism. Though we have come along way. Places that were segregated along time ago are not anymore. We still hear racist jokes and comments. Maybe some people will think about there comments or actions before they say or do something. |
